Program Highlights: Minor in French and Francophone Studies

Small class sizes at John Carroll lead to interactive courses and the ability to ask big questions with no intimidation. Learning a new language is hard, but with real teaching from passionate Francophones, your experience will be extraordinarily tailored to you.

Many French students complement or complete their studies in French-speaking countries, pursuing high-level courses in topics beyond language – science, technology, math, business. Study law at the Institut Catholique d’Etudes Supérieures, (ICES) in La Roche sur Yon, France or study business in Normandy. Or, pursue a short-term service abroad, helping others while experiencing the immersion of local languages. The Rene Fabien Scholarship is available to French minors to provide financial assistance for study abroad experiences.

FR310 FRENCH/FRANCOPHONE CINEMA

Emphasis on selected films either as genre or as an expression of culture, civilization, language, or a combination of these, depending on the instructor’s field of specialization and student interest.

FR 306 FRENCH FOR BUSINESS

In Paris and beyond, French numbers among the top languages spoken in the business world. You will quickly understand just how big of a role French plays on the international business stage, with hands-on experiences, such as simulations and analysis of authentic business documents in French. You will even have the option to sit for the Diplôme exam, a prestigious credential offered by the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris.

FR311 - FRENCH CIVILIZATION

Examination through texts, films, and other media of major historical, intellectual, and artistic influences that have shaped French civilization. Identification of values and myths that have contributed to the formation of modern France and continue to influence contemporary French culture.
