NSF S-STEM MIRRORS

Transfer students to John Carroll University who are pursuing science and technology majors may now apply for Molding Identity & Raising Retention through Opportunities for Reflection In STEM (MIRRORS) scholarships. These scholarships, funded from the National Science Foundation’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) program, will provide up to $4,000 per year to low-income transfer students with demonstrated financial need and academic promise to succeed in STEM disciplines at JCU. Scholarships are renewable for students who continue to meet eligibility requirements.

Scholarship Details

The NSF S-STEM MIRRORS program will provide scholarships to transfer students who are pursuing bachelor’s degrees in STEM disciplines. For transfer students starting Fall 2020 and Fall 2021, the program will support students with two years of funding.

Program components for transfer students include:

  • Enhanced, STEM-specific activities integrated into JCU’s transfer student orientation;
  • A summer bridge program, preparing students for advanced STEM coursework, imparting key skills for academic success, and developing connections with students, staff, and faculty;
  • A cohort advising course to introduce scholars to the JCU community and reinforce relevant skills at each stage of their academic development;
  • An Entering Science and an Entering Research course to scaffold the experience of MIRRORS scholars as they prepare for and participate in academic and research experiences at JCU and beyond;
  • Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) activities complementing key STEM courses;
  • Competitive funds to support summer research and attendance at scientific meetings.
Eligibility

To be eligible, students must:

  1. be an admitted transfer student of JCU;
  2. have substantial demonstrated financial need as determined by the FAFSA, with preference given to Pell-eligible students;
  3. be a U.S. Citizen;
  4. have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA;
  5. have a current FAFSA on file with JCU;
  6. intend to major in one of the following STEM disciplines:
    Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering Physics, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Physics;
  7. complete the MIRRORS program application.
Become a Peer Mentor

We are seeking peer mentors to work with students for John Carroll University’s NSF S-STEM MIRRORS Scholarship program.

Peer mentors will guide students as they navigate social and academic life on campus during their time at JCU, which may include:

  • participating in special events such as the Summer Bridge Program;
  • taking part in STEM-specific activities at the last student orientation session;
  • participating in STEM-specific activities during Streak Week at the end of August;
  • leading Peer-Led Team Learning sessions with MIRRORS scholars for regularly scheduled sessions during fall and spring semesters (up to four times per month);
  • attending cohort advising sessions and STEM activities;
  • sharing their own experiences;
  • offering guidance on study skills, time management, semester and career path planning, and life beyond the classroom.

Mentors will be paid a fixed hourly rate and in bi-weekly installments throughout the course of the semester.

Required qualifications:

  • STEM majors at JCU include all degree programs offered through the following departments: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics;
  • Enrolled full time as a declared STEM major (for junior and senior applicants) or making sufficient progress toward a STEM major (for sophomore applicants);
  • Spent a minimum of 2 semesters as a full-time student at JCU;
  • Available to work August 2020 – May 2021 on all mandatory dates (which may include the Summer Bridge Program, late summer orientations and Streak Week) and 1-2 hours weekly during fall and spring semesters;
  • 3.0 or higher overall and STEM GPA before and during employment;
  • Active engagement in student activities;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Energetic and enjoy working with people.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in STEM-related internships and research;
  • First-generation and underrepresented minority students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Choose Ohio First Scholars at John Carroll University

Choose Ohio First

John Carroll University students pursuing science and technology majors are eligible to apply for Choose Ohio First Scholarships. These scholarships, funded through a grant from the Ohio Department of Higher Education and John Carroll University, will help support, educate, and graduate academically-driven STEMM* students for emerging regional markets in healthcare, biotechnology, and other science-based industries. The Building an Innovation Pipeline Program reflects JCU’s commitment to inclusion, social justice, and leadership in our region and around the world by providing all students the opportunity to be successful in high-demand STEMM* disciplines.

*STEMM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine

Scholarship Details

THE BUILDING AN INNOVATION PIPELINE PROGRAM

Our program complements existing institutional efforts promoting student success and reflects JCU’s commitment to the Jesuit ideals of social justice, knowledge in action, and cura personalis, care for the whole person.  We connect our students to local STEMM employers, including research institutes and universities, industrial world headquarters, museums, and arboreta.

Program Elements:

  • A series of 0 credit cohort advising courses for all Choose Ohio First students that will support them throughout their time at JCU, aiding in college transition, major declaration, career development, and degree completion;
  • A 1 credit “Entering Research” course to help Choose Ohio First scholars prepare for and participate in research experiences at JCU and beyond;
  • Increased promotion of and access to campus academic and support services;
  • STEMM-specific activities integrated into JCU’s student orientation and move-in week;
  • Leadership training to help students develop the skills necessary for STEMM innovation.
Eligibility

The Choose Ohio First Scholarship is designed to strengthen Ohio’s competitiveness within Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM). Students must be Ohio residents intending to major in a STEMM discipline. An application is required, and recipients are required to maintain a 3.0 overall GPA and a 3.0 STEMM GPA.

All Choose Ohio First Scholars must be incoming students and:

  • residents of Ohio;
  • accepted by the JCU Admission Office as an undergraduate student;
  • intending to major in the following STEMM* departments/majors: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics & Computer Science, Healthcare IT, Physics, Exercise Science, Psychology with a Neuroscience Concentration, and Pre-Health.

Competitive incoming first-year applicants will have a minimum 3.5 high school overall grade point average and 26 Math ACT score or 590 Math SAT score.
