Newsome - 1 BREE NEWSOME “Tearing Hatred from the Sky” Wednesday, October 26, 2016 6:30 PM Lecture Donahue Auditorium, Dolan Center for Science & Technology Following the slaughter of nine people at Mother Emmanuel (AME) Church in Charleston, South Carolina by a white supremacist, Bree Newsome scaled the 30-foot flagpole in front of the statehouse and removed the “stars and bars” declaring, “This flag comes down today!” Bree’s intention was to create a new image, a new symbol and a new consciousness of the power inherent in direct action. The iconic picture of her on the pole, flag in hand, has become a touchstone of empowerment for disenfranchised people around the world. This event is sponsored by John Carroll's Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion (CSDI) and is part of the Dr. Shirley S. Seaton Cultural Awareness Series. The Series illuminates various cultural perspectives to help sharpen an understanding of the ways in which we are all interconnected. Questions? Call 216.397.4185.
