Mass casualties are, unfortunately, inevitable. Recent mass casualty incidents include Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and Las Vegas. To be prepared in case of a catastrophe on John Carroll’s campus, JCUEMS hosts an annual MCI, which stands for mass casualty incident, utilizing volunteer actor patients with special effects makeup (latex wounds, fake blood etc.). Our annual MCI will be on Sunday October 29th at 9:30am-12:00pm on the 1st floor of Grasselli Library. JCUEMS also will collaborate with University Heights Fire Department to make the drill as realistic as possible.
The volunteers will be assigned a card with injury details as well as vitals, then will receive fake blood and fake latex injuries to make a realistic looking victim. The volunteers will then be staged throughout the 1st floor of the library. JCUEMS will tag each patient with a triage tag, and will transport the patients to their designated treatment zones within the library. For our MCI to function properly, JCUEMS needs volunteers. Volunteers will have to arrive at Grasselli Library by 8:30am on the day of the MCI, which is Sunday October 29th. Volunteers will receive food, as well as 4 service hours for assisting. Three hospitals in the area are used in case of emergencies at John Carroll University:
John Carroll University Emergency Medical Services (JCU EMS) was established in April 2002 in response to the sudden and preventable death of a student. EMS was established by JCU students and is still run by JCU students who have Emergency Medical Technician-Basic or Emergency Medical Responder training and certification. The purpose of the organization is to provide quick response service for on-campus medical emergencies. Emergency care and treatment is provided by the students under the medical direction of Dr. Arnold Feltoon, an emergency department physician at University Hospitals Portage Medical Center. The organization works with University Heights Fire Department for ambulance transport when necessary. EMS also works closely with the John Carroll University Police Department and the Office of Residence Life.
EMS offers several opportunities for students. The required certification qualifies members for job opportunities in fire, ambulance, and hospital services. The experience develops advanced leadership skills and members obtain clinical experience, such as technical skills and patient care. Many relationships are formed among current members, alumni, and members of organizations that work closely with EMS. Some members of the organization may attend the annual National Collegiation Emergency Medical Services Foundation (NCEMSF) Conference, which is attended by students belonging to EMS organizations from schools all across the country.

There are currently five different levels of emergency medical care certification, ranging from least to most advanced:
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
The training that John Carroll EMTs are given is for the EMR or EMT-Basic qualification, although those with previous training may also be accepted. These EMRs and EMT-Basics are able to perform patient assessment and manage trauma and medical emergencies with skills such as CPR, defibrillation, airway adjuncts, taking vital signs, splinting, and assistance with administrations of some medication.
The application is present below. The applications will be open at all times. Along with the online application, an interview must be scheduled and completed with the EMS executive board. Applicants will be contacted to schedule interviews. For more information about the application process, contact a member of the executive board.

Emergency Medical Services Application
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with John Carroll University Emergency Medical Services. Our work is strictly volunteer but requires a significant time and emotional commitment. It is also necessary that the applicant front the cost for the class originally. A portion will be refunded by the department once two semesters of service are completed. If this causes a problem or if you have any questions, feel free to contact the Chief or Deputy-Chief of the department, as found under the roster section of this page. Please be sure that you can meet these requirements before you apply.
Please follow these steps to apply:
- Fully complete the application.
- Copy your CPR card and any other certifications you may have obtained prior to joining our department.
- Complete an interview with members of executive board.
Please do not apply if:
- You are not available to attend and pass CPR for Healthcare Providers and Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) or Emergency Medical Responder training within the next year.
- You are physically or emotionally unable to complete the challenging work required of an emergency medical response worker.
- You are not willing to commit two semesters of work for our department, including at least one weekly shift, one tri-weekly weekend rotation, and one special event per semester.
The typical training process is as follows:
- Be accepted as a member to begin the training process for our department.
- Obtain CPR for Healthcare Providers certification and either EMT-B (approximately 150 hour course) or EMR (approximately 60 hour course) training.
- Obtain both national and State of Ohio certification; apply for reciprocity in the state of Ohio if you trained in another state.
- Before beginning work with our department, complete one Responder In Training shift with JCU-EMS and 12 hours of ride along time with University Heights Fire Department OR another department as required by your course instructor.

In order to be a member of the John Carroll University Emergency Medical Services (EMS), students must have EMR or EMT-Basic certification as well as sign up for at least one week-day shift and one weekend shift every third weekend. Shift information can be found below.
Training days and monthly department meetings are mandatory for all members. The training days can also be used as continuing education credit, which can be used for recertification. This is necessary in order to maintain national and Ohio EMT-Basic and CPR certification. In order to receive a partial refund for the course, at least two semesters must be served. Lastly, all members must follow Standard Operating Procedures on shift and represent the department well at all times.
Once accepted into the program, candidates register for an EMR or EMT-B course. As of now, students are required to find their own EMR or EMT-B course near their home. Please feel free to contact any EMS members for recommendations or help.
Both courses require a lecture/lab and ride along time with an ambulance facility. Finally, in order to practice as an EMR or EMT, students must then pass an exam administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, qualifying them for a certification and license to practice from the Ohio Department of Public Safety Division of EMS.
Weekday shifts run Sunday through Thursday 5 p.m.- 11 p.m. Weekend shifts are Thursday from 11 p.m. – 7 a.m and Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m.-7 a.m.
While on shift, EMTs may do homework, sleep, eat, spend time with friends, and be anywhere on campus. However, while on shift, one may not leave campus, use or be in the presence of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs (unless directly related to a call), do anything that would prevent him/her from responding immediately to a call, compromise quality patient care, or damage the reputation of EMS.

Emergency Medical Services
Station 1 is located inside the Lombardo Student Center, across from the Intramural Gym.
EMS staff is active at Station 1 at 5 and 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday for check-ins. On Friday and Saturday, staff will be at Station 1 at 7 p.m. to check in.
Outside of those times, staff will be on call and available through Campus Safety Services at 216.397.1234.
