The inaugural  Rev. Dr. Valentino Lassiter “Continuing the Dream” award was celebrated on Monday, February 22, 2016 in a workshop entitled “Embrace, not disgrace!”, presented by Gurnit Chima. A freshman Psychology major at John Carroll University, Gurnit, who officially received the award at the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on January 26, 2016, addressed in her interactive workshop how stereotypes evolve over time and our means of dispelling them. The workshop took place in the O’Connell Reading Room (Dolan Center for Science and Technology) and had an attendance of 32 people. Dr. Sheilla McGinn, the Chair of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at John Carroll, presented the award to Gurnit at the end of the workshop, together with a check for $500. An intimate reception followed the workshop. Rev. Dr. Valentino Lassiter “Continuing the Dream” award honors a JCU student who is continuing the dream shared by the Rev. Drs. Valentino Lassiter and Martin Luther King, Jr. The dream is equality and harmony across racial, ethnic, and religious boundaries while working to foster a nation united in freedom and harmony, with each person being treated with justice and respect.
