Mission Mondays

Consider sharing your 100-word reflection with the Mission & Advocacy Committee of Staff Council on how you live the mission of JCU in your role on campus. Look for it under the “Mission Monday” headline in Inside JCU. Contact Julie (jmyers@jcu.edu) with questions. Submit your own reflection here: http://bit.ly/2nUx9AO.

Presidential Search

It is important that our staff representatives, Lisa Brown Cornelius and Ruta Marino, bring into the presidential search process the questions, concerns and ideas of the entire staff.

If you have suggestions, questions or ideas to pass along to these representatives, please send them to staffcouncil@jcu.edu or submit them via the Staff Council’s Feedback form at http://sites.jcu.edu/staffcouncil/pages/qa/feedback/. More information about the presidential search can be found at https://presidentialsearch.jcu.edu/.

Open Enrollment Period

HR has asked us to remind you that the Open Enrollment period for staff benefits ends Friday, November 10! Don’t miss the deadline! Human Resources is offering many opportunities for staff to learn more about this year’s benefits. Find more details of this week’s workshops on the HR website.

Not eligible for full-time benefits? You can still take advantage of a lot of staff perks. Check out HR’s list of “perks and benefits” here!

(What’s your favorite benefit of working for JCU? Send us an email at staffcouncil@jcu.edu and let us know! Your answer may appear in November’s “Question of the Month!”)

Tobacco Free Campus Policy

One last reminder that Thursday, October 12 is the final day to give feedback on the proposed university “Tobacco-Free” policy. Staff are encouraged to visit the HR website to give feedback on this policy draft. On November 16, 2016, Staff Council voted to endorse the evaluation of such a policy; the Policy Review Committee has now acted to bring a proposal forward for campus comment. Please take some time to read and weigh in on this proposal.

A Day of Reflection for Faculty and Staff

One final reminder that Wednesday, October 11 is the final day to register for this Friday’s Day of Reflection for Faculty and Staff, hosted by Campus Ministry and the Office of University Mission and Identity. The event will run from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm on campus. All staff members are encouraged to take this opportunity to pause, reflect, and share some quiet time together. This program qualifies for Mission Leave.

Presidential Search

At the Sept. 28 All-Staff meeting, Staff Council President Lisa Brown Cornelius gave a brief update on the Presidential Search. Lisa is Staff Council’s representative on the Search Committee, and a second staff representative will be tapped to serve in the Feedback Group to meet with final candidates.

It is important that our staff representatives bring into this process the questions, concerns and ideas of the entire staff. If you have suggestions, questions or ideas to pass along to these representatives to the Presidential Search, please send them to staffcouncil@jcu.edu or submit them via Staff Council’s Feedback Form.

FLSA Workshop

The Office of Human Resources will sponsor a workshop for all employees on the Fair Labor Standards Act on Wednesday, October 11 from 9:00-11:00 am in the LSC Conference Room. This workshop, entitled “Wage & Hour Issues in the Workplace: Understanding the Fair Labor Standards Act” will be led by Alex Teodosio (AVP of Human Resources) and Colleen Treml (General Counsel).

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sets standards for basic minimum wage and overtime pay. It also establishes requirements to qualify for exemption from overtime pay. There are specific requirements under the FLSA that impact everyday management of staff by supervisors, including management of lunch time, work from home, and the writing of a job description. An update of the FLSA regulatory changes will be provided. This workshop is designed to clarify the requirements of the FLSA that are applicable to supervisors through real-life examples. For more information, please contact Human Resources.
