RESIDENCE LIFE: COVID-19 UPDATE AS OF 3/16/2020 AT 3:11 PM

Good afternoon, residential students,

As you read in President Johnson’s email, John Carroll University will continue online instruction through the end of the academic year. Due to this extension, the residence halls will also remain closed (except to those who have been approved to stay due to extenuating circumstances).  The University is working on details related to prorated housing and campus meal plans. The final arrangements will be communicated on or before April 13, 2020.

In order to support your transition to online instruction and learning, in an abundance of care for our students, their families, and our community, and aligned with guidance provided by the State of Ohio about social distancing, large gatherings, and the steps necessary to slow the spread of COVID-19, we will not initiate any residence hall move out processes until after April 13, 2020. Details and plans will be developed based on the information and guidance available in the coming weeks and will be communicated via email to all residential students.

In our communication encouraging you to return to your permanent addresses, we asked you to plan and pack in anticipation of not returning to your residential space prior to April 13, 2020. While we are not able to provide you access to move completely out of your residential space prior to our move out processes, we recognize you may have left a critical item in your room. If you need assistance in retrieving this item, please contact the Office of Residence Life at (216) 397-4408 or jcureslife@jcu.edu.

Thank you for your patience during this challenging time. Even though we are all living and learning remotely, it is my hope that the relationships you developed as a result of your residential experience are sources of comfort and joy as we all adjust to a new way forward.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Residence Life at (216) 397-4408 or jcureslife@jcu.edu.

Sincerely,

Lisa Brown Cornelius

Senior Director of Residence Life

RESIDENCE LIFE: COVID-19 UPDATE AS OF 3/12/2020 AT 2:37 PM

Good afternoon, residential students,

As was shared via email yesterday, the expectations for residential students during this period of online instruction have been modified.

Residential students are now required to leave the residence halls to return to their permanent address by Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 2:00pm. The residence halls will be inaccessible until at least April 13, 2020. Exceptions to this requirement will be made for the following students:

  • Student Athletes involved in Spring sports
  • Students who are student teaching or in university-recognized internships that are continuing through April 13
  • Student employees whose work has been deemed essential by their department and approved by their supervisor
  • International students or other students who are unable to travel due to distance
  • Those who are unable to return to their permanent address for personal reasons, including but not limited to: food insecurity, housing insecurity, limited access to wifi or computer equipment needed to participate in online academic work

We are taking these actions in an abundance of caution and care for our community. This requirement allows for greater social distancing as recommended by public health agencies while ensuring those students who are not able to return to their permanent address are cared for and supported.

If you are a student requesting an exception, you must complete this form by 8:30am on Friday, March 13, 2020. If there are questions about your request, you will be contacted by the Office of Residence Life via email.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Office of Residence Life at (216) 397-4408 or jcureslife@jcu.edu.

Residential students are now required to leave the residence halls to return to their permanent address by Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 2:00pm. The residence halls will be inaccessible until at least April 13, 2020. Exceptions to this requirement will be made for the following students:

PLEASE READ THIS UPDATE IN ITS ENTIRETY. IT CONTAINS IMPORTANT DETAILS RELATED TO JOHN CARROLL’S PLANNED RESPONSE TO COVID-19.

As you read in the earlier email communication, John Carroll University is moving to online instruction as of Monday, March 16, 2020 and cancelling classes for the remainder of this week.

While the university and the residence halls will remain open, all residential students are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to make arrangements to return to their permanent addresses, especially those that are within 400 miles of John Carroll University until, at the earliest, Monday, April 13, 2020.  For all students planning to return to their permanent address, we ask that you make arrangements to leave campus by 2:00pm on Saturday, March 14, 2020. At that time all residence halls will be inaccessible to students unless they are registered to stay.

We recognize that it may not be possible for all students to return to their permanent address, therefore, students are able to choose to remain on campus. For students who choose to stay on campus, the University will remain open and limited dining options will be available.

ALL STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE THIS FORM INDICATING THEIR INTENTIONS RELATED TO HOUSING.

For students planning to leave campus, please make note of the following:

  • Take all academic related materials with you, including books, laptops and chargers, and other related materials
  • Take all medication, valuables, and clothing required for an extended period of time away from campus.
  • Take all important documents, including passports, driver’s license, credit cards, etc.

As you prepare to leave campus, please do the following:

  • Empty refrigerator of all perishable items.  Defrost freezer and leave refrigerator open upon departure.
  • Close and secure all windows.
  • Empty all trash.
  • Set thermostats to 2 in most residence halls.  Bernet, duplexes, and houses set thermostat to 65 and Murphy to warmer.
  • Turn off all lights and lock your room and suite door if applicable.

Please pack carefully.  Once you leave your residence hall, you will not be able to access it until the university returns to normal operations.

We recognize this is a challenging time for our entire community. We encourage you to make the decision that is best for you and those you care about. Please know that the Residence Life staff is here to support you and answer any questions you may have. Please continue to check your JCU email for updates.

As a reminder, ALL RESIDENTIAL STUDENTS MUST INDICATE THEIR INTENTIONS BY COMPLETING THIS FORM!
