Four John Carroll University neuroscience students earned awards of excellence for their research at the 68th annual Eastern Colleges Science Conference, held recently at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York.
  • Christopher Benhatzel ’14 received an award of excellence for the outstanding poster presentation in health science.
  • Rachael Libertin ’14 received an award of excellence for the outstanding research paper in health science.
  • Anthony Lytle ’14 received an award of excellence for the outstanding research paper in cellular and molecular biology.
  • Ijaza Saadat ’14 received an award of excellence for the outstanding research paper in psychology.
John Carroll students have won excellence or first-place awards at the conference for 27 consecutive years. Their submissions result from independent research projects in JCU’s neuroscience concentration, which involves students majoring in biology, chemistry, or psychology. John Carroll neuroscience students conduct research on campus and at facilities including the Cleveland Clinic and other medical institutions. Helen Murphy, Ph.D., professor of psychology and neuroscience concentration coordinator, and Cyrilla Wideman, Ph.D., professor of biology, accompanied their students to the Eastern Colleges Science Conference. The conference featured research by more than 300 students from approximately 20 colleges and universities. Faculty from educational and research institutions across the Eastern U.S. evaluated the students’ submissions.
