John Carroll University presents Gary Rivlin, Author of the best-selling book: BROKE, USA Thursday, October 28 7:15 p.m. Dolan Center for Science and Technology / Donahue Auditorium This event is free and open to the public. WHO: Gary Rivlin is a journalist and the author of BROKE USA: From Pawnshops to Poverty Inc.-How the Working Poor Became Big Business. In BROKE, USA, Rivlin investigates the fringe financial sector and the rise of the poverty business. He explores the check cashing industry and the subprime meltdown, chronicling newly-hatched enterprises that become successful at the expense of the working poor. Rivlin has written for many publications, including The New York Times, Newsweek, GQ magazine and Wired, the Chicago Reader, and the American Bar Association Journal. He is also the author of The Plot to Get Bill Gates, The Godfather of Silicon Valley, and Drive- By, the true story of a single drive-by shooting that killed a 13-year-old. That book, a 1995 New York Times Notable Book of the Year, was a finalist for Pen-West’s “Best of the West” award. Rivlin’s first book, Fire on the Prairie: Harold Washington and the Politics of Race, is the winner of the 1992 Carl Sandburg Award for best non-fiction and also the Chicago Sun-Times’ Non-Fiction Book of the Year.
