Update: Friday, February 28, 2020

Dear John Carroll Community,

With Spring Break next week, we are writing to remind you to adhere to any travel alerts and health advisories that could impact your travel, especially those related to the COVID-19 virus (Coronavirus). It is important to reference the Centers for Disease Control Travel Advisory website in advance of any planned travel, especially travel outside of the United States.

The health and safety of the John Carroll community is paramount. We continue to follow health advisories and travel alerts from the U.S. Department of State and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and continue to work closely with the Ohio Department of Health to monitor the situation.

At present, all University-sponsored immersion and academic trips over Spring Break are taking place as scheduled. Our risk assessment team, in consultation with University leaders, is meeting regularly to assess the progress of the virus and implications for John Carroll students, faculty and staff. Students, faculty, and staff planning other personal travel to international destinations are encouraged to review pre-existing travel plans and itineraries, keeping in mind that travel restrictions related to particular countries can change without warning.

As recommended by the CDC, to protect yourself when traveling, please take the following precautions:

  • Avoid contact with sick people.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Clean your hands often by washing them with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60-90% alcohol. Soap and water should be used if hands are visibly dirty.
  • It is especially important to clean hands after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.

The John Carroll University Student Health and Wellness Center is a resource for our community members. If you have questions, please contact our health center staff at 216-397-4349.

Please continue to reference https://jcu.edu/healthupdate for best practices related to flu and virus prevention hygiene, and for JCU updates related to COVID-19.

Thank you,

Mark D. McCarthy, Ph.D. Vice President for Student Affairs
