John Carroll University has received a $450,000 gift from Howard “Hoddy” Hanna III and his wife, Mary Anne, in support of the Forever Carroll Campaign. Mr. Hanna is chairman and chief executive officer of Howard Hanna Holdings Inc., which includes Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, the 4th largest real estate company in the United States. The endowed scholarship fund will be called the Howard and Mary Anne Hanna Scholarship, and will be awarded based on academic excellence and financial need. The Forever Carroll Campaign has raised $86 million of the $100 million goal. Hoddy Hanna retired from John Carroll’s Board of Directors last month after nine years of service. He graduated from the University in 1969 with a degree in political science. Mr. Hanna received his real estate license when he was just 18 years old and began his real estate career as a weekend sales associate for Howard Hanna, which his father started in 1957. Under Hoddy Hanna’s leadership, the business has evolved into the top full-service real estate company in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and New York. His innovation in the industry is renowned: Howard Hanna Real Estate Services was among the first in the country to launch a weekly television program showcasing homes listed for sale. “My experience at John Carroll taught me how to think and how to evaluate circumstances, which has served me well in life—that’s why our gift is going to scholarships that can benefit people of all backgrounds,” Mr. Hanna said. Mr. Hanna is committed to community service on many levels. He has been recognized with multiple awards, including The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) “National American Heritage Award.” He also recently completed a term on the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Additionally, Mr. Hanna currently serves as chair of the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh board of trustees and as a member of the hospital’s Foundation board. He also is a member of the boards of RBS Citizen’s Financial Group, the Diocese of Pittsburgh Finance Council, YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh, LaRoche College, and University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business Board of Visitors. He is a founder and former chairman of Family House, which provides housing accommodations for patients and families with life-threatening illnesses in Pittsburgh. The Hannas reside in Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania, and Naples, Florida, where they have raised five children and are the proud grandparents of thirteen grandchildren.
