John Carroll University President Rev. Robert L. Niehoff, S.J., announced today that men’s and women’s lacrosse will debut as varsity sports at the Division III school, with competition beginning during the 2013-14 academic year. “We are excited to add one of the fastest growing sports in the country to our varsity athletics program, ” said Father Niehoff. “With this level of student and alumni interest in lacrosse, we know its the right time for us move forward with expanding our varsity sports in this way.” The men’s and women’s lacrosse teams will be built upon the existing talent of John Carroll’s competitive club teams, and this is the first addition of a varsity sport at John Carroll since the 1999-2000 academic year when women’s golf began competition. John Carroll University Director of Athletics and Recreation Laurie Massa said, “With such a great demand for lacrosse, I’m looking forward to building these teams. We expect to hire the coaches this fall and to attract student-athletes who have the leadership skills and the pioneering spirit to start a new varsity program.” The addition of the two lacrosse teams will bring the total number of athletic teams at John Carroll to 23 (12 men and 11 women). The school currently sponsors intercollegiate athletic teams in football, women’s volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, wrestling, baseball, softball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, and men's and women's track and field. John Carroll, an NCAA Division III institution, is a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference.
