John Carroll University adjunct professor, Barbara Raymond, has written a book, The Baby Thief, that has been optioned by Academy Award®-winning actress, Octavia Spencer, for a movie. Spencer will appear as a special host of Raymond’s book signing on Sunday, August 13, at the Root Café in Lakewood, Ohio, from 1-2:30pm EST. The Baby Thief has been hailed as a “Best Book of the Year” by Publishers Weekly, and is based on a true story about Georgia Tann, a Tennessee social worker who ran a black market adoption ring. Tann stole thousands of children from poor people and sold them to wealthy families across the United States. Raymond was the first person to discover the connection between Tann and the secrecy in adoption that has hurt so many Americans. Spencer, who won the Academy Award® for The Help and was an Oscar® nominee for the 2017 movie, Hidden Figures, will appear as a special host of Raymond’s book signing. Raymond teaches Public Speaking in John Carroll's Tim Russert Department of Communication and Theatre Arts. She is grateful for the opportunity to share her work, saying, “I’m excited to bring this important story to light to a wider audience.”  Raymond is an award-winning writer whose articles have appeared in many national publications, including The New York TimesGood Housekeeping, and USA Today.  She is actively engaged with mentoring John Carroll students. Raymond  initiated the Button Project in 2016, highlighting social and ethnic groups on campus. The Project was a huge success; in five days, during Kindness Week (February), more than 5,000 buttons were distributed to members of the John Carroll community.
