Courtesy of Phillip McCollum, Morehouse College John Carroll University has appointed Terry L. Mills, Ph.D., as the University’s first Assistant Provost for Diversity and Chief Diversity Officer, effective August 18. Dr. Mills comes to John Carroll from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he has worked for the past seven years. He most recently served as Dean of Research and Sponsored Programs, as well as Professor of Sociology. He was previously Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences. From 2002 until 2007, Dr. Mills held leadership positions at the University of Florida. He was Associate Dean for Minority Affairs and Director of the Office for Academic Support and Institutional Services, in addition to his role as a faculty member in the Sociology department since 1997. Dr. Mills developed or supervised programs to strengthen minority outreach, support ethnic minority and first-generation students, and enhance the awareness and appreciation of diversity among students, faculty, and staff. At both Morehouse College and the University of Florida, Dr. Mills taught courses on the Sociology of Aging and Organizational Sociology and published dozens of refereed journal articles and book chapters. He has served on national professional boards and committees and has received numerous awards and individual and institutional grants to support his work, including grants for an Upward Bound Program and the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program whose goal is to increase graduate degree awards for students from underrepresented segments of society. An active university citizen, Dr. Mills has been a mentor and advisor to both students and colleagues.
