Philip Metres, Ph.D., John Carroll University professor of English, has received the 2013 Beatrice Hawley Award for his book, “Sand Opera.” The award is given annually by Alice James Books, a nonprofit cooperative poetry press founded in 1973. “Sand Opera” is a meditation on fatherhood and war during the post-9/11 wars. Metres received financial support to complete the manuscript through a 2013 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Creative Writing (Poetry). The fellowship represents the highest standards of excellence and engaging the public with diverse and excellent art. “Sand Opera” will be published by Alice James Books in January 2015. Metres has written several other books, including “To See the Earth,” “Come Together: Imagine Peace,” “Behind the Lines: War Resistance Poetry on the American Homefront Since 1941,” “abu ghraib arias,” and “A Concordance of Leaves.” His work also has appeared in “Best American Poetry” and “Inclined to Speak: Contemporary Arab American Poetry,” and has garnered four Ohio Arts Council Grants, the Cleveland Arts Prize, and the Arab American Book Award for poetry. Metres has served on the JCU faculty since 2001. Last year, he received the Lucrezia Culicchia Award for Teaching Excellence, presented annually to a faculty member in the University’s College of Arts and Sciences. Metres has incorporated service-learning components into several of his courses, including Introduction to Creative Writing. In addition, he has taught courses in the University’s Peace, Justice and Human Rights interdisciplinary major and minor program, and is coordinating the 2013 JCU Belfast/Northern Ireland Summer Institute in Peace Building.
