John Carroll University and the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences have formed a new collaborative agreement that will provide students the opportunity to earn a doctor of pharmacy degree in a shorter amount of time.

A memorandum of agreement was formally signed on May 1, 2018, by John Carroll Provost and Academic Vice President Dr. Nicholas Santilli; Dr. James O’Donnell, dean of the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; Dr. Michael Cain, vice president for health sciences and dean of the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences; and, Dr. Graham Hammill, vice provost and dean of The Graduate School at UB.

John Carroll's Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Margaret Farrar said, “John Carroll is pleased to provide this opportunity to talented JCU students interested in pursuing a career in pharmacy. At John Carroll, students will receive a strong background in the sciences and the opportunity to hone the critical thinking and communication skills that are at the center of our liberal arts education.”  She added, “When they arrive at the University at Buffalo, JCU students will receive cutting-edge training in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences from one of the best schools of pharmacy in the nation.” Under the 3+4 agreement, students will complete three years of undergraduate study in the JCU chemistry program and then apply to UB’s pharmacy program. Once accepted, students will have their first-year pharmacy courses applied toward completion of their bachelor’s degree at John Carroll. Rather than taking four years to complete a bachelor’s degree, followed by an additional four years to complete the doctor of pharmacy degree, students will complete both programs in seven years. The pharmacy program will guarantee spaces each year for qualified John Carroll students. Discussing the UB-John Carroll partnership, Dean O’Donnell said, “The University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences values our strong collaboration with John Carroll University, and this 3+4 agreement will further solidify this partnership. We look forward to having their best and brightest students as members of our PharmD program.”
