Matt Sokol ’15, a communication major and entrepreneurship minor, received first place and a prize of $5,000 at the ideaLab competition at Lorain County Community College on March 31, 2015. The competition is sponsored by the Entrepreneurship Education Consortium, an organization of 11 Northeast Ohio colleges and universities with entrepreneur centers promoting both the concept and reality of entrepreneurship among college students. Judges for the contest were entrepreneurs from Northeast Ohio companies. Matt developed a revolutionary new marine paint, Hammerhead Paint, which is environmentally friendly and provides longer lasting coverage for the boat. He created the product last summer after working in several marinas during summer vacations. “Matt is a terrific student. He’ll be a big entrepreneurial player someday,” said Mark Hauserman, director of the Muldoon Center for Entrepreneurship housed in the Boler School of Business.  Hauserman continued, “We’re growing the next generation of entrepreneurs. We’re good at what we do through our creativity, invention, and innovation.” The entrepreneurship program was recognized by Bloomberg Businessweek in September as a national top 25 undergraduate program. Sokol received faculty mentoring from Jackie Schmidt, Ph.D., interim director of the interdisciplinary entrepreneurship minor and professor in the Tim Russert Department of Communication and Theatre Arts, and from Tom Bonda, J.D., adviser to the Entrepreneurship Minor Club and visiting assistant professor in the Department of Management, Marketing, and Logistics.
