John Carroll University student Brigette Mendes ’16 placed eighth in the nation in the junior varsity division of the American Debate Association championship, held recently at Liberty University. JCU students have finished in the top 10 at the championship for four consecutive years. The JCU Debate team competes in more than a dozen tournaments each year. The team, which has won four national championships, is coached by Brent Brossman, Ph.D., associate professor in The Tim Russert Department of Communication and Theatre Arts. “My experience on the debate team has been nothing short of wonderful,” says Mendes, a political science major from Cleveland Heights, Ohio. “It has given me some of the best friends that I believe I will ever have, and Brent Brossmann has taught me so much, not just about debate, but about life.”
