Three John Carroll University neuroscience students earned awards of excellence for their research at the 67th annual Eastern Colleges Science Conference, held recently at Providence College in Rhode Island. JCU students have won excellence or first-place awards at the conference for 26 consecutive years. Jeffrey Dunn ’13 received an award of excellence in two categories: the outstanding research paper in psychology and the outstanding poster presentation in psychology. Kayla Meckley ’13 and Sarah Slagle ’13 received an award of excellence for the outstanding poster presentation in biopsychology/neuroscience. The students’ conference submissions resulted from their independent research projects in JCU’s neuroscience concentration, which involves students majoring in biology, chemistry, or psychology. JCU neuroscience students conduct research on campus and at institutions including the Cleveland Clinic, the MetroHealth System, and University Hospitals. Helen Murphy, Ph.D., professor of psychology and neuroscience concentration coordinator, and Cyrilla Wideman, Ph.D., professor of biology, accompanied their students at the Eastern Colleges Science Conference. The conference featured research by more than 300 students from approximately 20 colleges and universities. Faculty judges from educational and research institutions across the Eastern U.S. evaluated the students’ submissions.
