John Carroll University is pleased to welcome His Excellency Archbishop Michael L. Fitzgerald, M. Afr., to campus as scholar in residence and the 2014-15 Walter and Mary Tuohy Chair in Interreligious Studies in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies. A member of the Society of Missionaries of Africa, Archbishop Fitzgerald was ordained as a bishop by then Pope John Paul II on Jan. 6, 1992, and was raised to the dignity of archbishop on Oct. 1, 2002. He previously served as apostolic nuncio in Egypt and delegate to the League of Arab States from 2006-2012 and as president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue from 2002-2006.
