Stefano Deleidi '87 What began as a casual conversation resulted in the establishment of internship opportunities in East Asia. Two years ago, Stefano Deleidi ’87 spoke with a few representatives of John Carroll about his interest to provide JCU students with experiential learning at LU-VE Group, a leader in the commercial refrigeration industry. Deleidi is managing director of LU-VE Group, Asia Pacific. Among those involved in the discussion with Deleidi were Dr. Jeanne Colleran (Provost and Academic Vice President), Dr. Pam Mason (Associate Dean of Social Sciences, Education, and Global Studies), and Pete Bernardo (Senior Director, Philanthropic Relations). Deleidi is passionate about providing a hands-on experience to JCU students who participate in his internships. “An internship must be real. You study what is in a book, but you learn from experiencing how a company is run,” he stated. All interns work on the production line to have a practical understanding of how the product is made. From there, they work in dedicated areas of business operations -- management, manufacturing, logistics, purchasing, and after-sale service and support. The six-week internships are unpaid, but room and board and some living expenses are provided. The company, founded in 1930 in Milan, Italy, is based in China, has manufacturing and distribution operations across Europe and Asia, with a regional headquarters in Hong Kong, and a plant in Changshu, China. “I think it is important that alumni give back their time and resources to John Carroll. It can be very frustrating when you graduate; you have a degree but often not a direction of where to go or what to do with that degree. As an alumnus, I think we have a moral obligation to shine a light on their path and help them,” he reflected. Last year, four Boler School Business students, three of whom are veterans, participated in the internship; this month, two students will embark on this unique exposure to the operations of an international business.
