JCU’s entrepreneurship students win 1st place in competition John Carroll University students enrolled in the Entrepreneurship Minor are able to experience many opportunities designed to inspire leadership, teamwork, and creativity. The minor is designed to support all majors. One example is Entrepreneurship Immersion Week, held each year. The program is an idea competition among Northeast Ohio colleges and universities that are members of the Entrepreneurship Education Consortium (EEC). Teams of students attend workshops led by faculty, angel investors, entrepreneurs, and business leaders. The teams choose a business concept, study its market feasibility, and prepare a presentation for the competition. This year, John Carroll’s team won first place in the Entrepreneurship Immersion Week contest, earning a $2500 prize. Team members are: Matt Schutt (Marketing), Maria Ndini (Finance), Chloe Slavin (Integrated Marketing and Communications), Leah Berdysz ( Exercise Science) and Mikayla Hutchings (Finance). The competition was held in August at the University of Mount Union. Other EEC members who participated in the competition are: Ashland University, Baldwin Wallace University, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Hiram College, Kent State University, Lake Erie College, Lorain County Community College, the University of Akron, and the University of Mount Union. The JCU team designed a wristband that allows parents to monitor dehydration and UV exposure of their children. Advisors for the team are John Carroll faculty Tom Bonda, Mark Hauserman, and Dr. Jackie Schmidt. Entrepreneurship Immersion week is primarily funded by the Burton D. Morgan Foundation.
