JCU President Al Miciak and Saxbys CEO Nick Bayer
A cafe exclusively designed for and run by students helmed by a Student Cafe Executive Officer earning a salary and academic credit
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH (July 20, 2021) — Saxbys, a Certified B Corporation and coffee company headquartered in Philadelphia, is thrilled to announce its partnership with John Carroll University (JCU) to introduce an exclusively student-run cafe to campus in this Fall. Saxbys’ first cafe in Ohio will be located in the Administration Building and run via The Saxbys Experiential Learning Platform (E.L.P.).
Saxbys will bring an entrepreneurial proving ground to campus, partnering directly with JCU’s Provost's office to employ an undergraduate student each semester as a Student Cafe Executive Officer (SCEO). The SCEO will run and manage all aspects of the cafe including team development, community outreach initiatives, and the cafe’s profit & loss statement. Each student who holds this position will receive a full semester of college credit, a competitive salary, and bonus throughout their tenure, all while gaining the unparalleled experience of real-world, civic-minded business leadership. The cafe will be staffed entirely by JCU students.
The new cafe is part of a network of Saxbys’ pioneering Experiential Learning Platform holding residence in institutions like Penn State University, Bowie State University, and the University of Pittsburgh, designed to prepare the next generation of changemakers by providing undergraduates with in-depth entrepreneurial opportunities as a supplement to traditional classroom learning.
“President Miciak’s first statement as the leader of John Carroll University highlights experiential learning as a key ingredient in providing students with a transformative education when mixed together with academic rigor and personal formation,” said Saxbys Founder and CEO Nick Bayer. “We couldn’t imagine a better partner for our first Experiential Learning Platform cafe in Ohio, and we look forward to bringing this dynamic, student-centric experience to John Carroll where students get the one-of-a-kind opportunity to practice civic-minded leadership right on campus”
“We are excited to partner with Saxbys to offer this hands-on, real-world opportunity for our students,” said Dr. Alan Miciak, President of John Carroll University. “This combination of academic and experiential learning will position our students to succeed during their time at JCU and after graduation.”
This will also be the first Saxbys cafe to open in partnership with Parkhurst Dining; JCU’s on-campus dining service provider; furthering Parkhurst’s commitment to provide a diverse selection of dining experiences to the JCU community.
“Parkhurst is thrilled to enter into partnership with Saxbys to bring this impactful concept to John Carroll University. Our company shares many values with Saxbys; including a passion for food, caring for our community and embracing innovation,” said Jeff Broadhurst, President & CEO of Parkhurst Dining. “Parkhurst is a family-owned and operated company that also values entrepreneurship. We’re looking forward to providing this unique experiential learning opportunity to students at JCU, and to providing another outstanding dining option to the campus community.”
In the weeks to come, Saxbys and JCU look forward to announcing the inaugural Student Cafe Executive Officer who will lead the new cafe expected to open this fall.
