John Carroll University today applied for USA Tree Campus status through the completion of its 2019 Arbor Day and Green Streak Week festivities.President Michael D. Johnson, Ph.D., accompanied by Sustainability Committee chair Jeff Your, planted the 1,000th tree on campus on Monday afternoon in front of the Administration Building.
“With the planting of this oak tree, which concludes our Arbor Day celebrations, we can now apply for USA Tree Campus status,” said Dr. Johnson. “We are proud to complete our application in the same year that University Heights celebrates 40 years as a USA Tree City.”
Since 1976, the Tree City USA program has worked to promote sound urban forestry management. More than 3,400 communities hold such a distinction. The campus program is similar; in order to become a Tree Campus USA college, John Carroll must meet five standards, including an advisory committee, campus tree programs, and service-learning components.
“This application represents the ongoing work of the University’s Sustainability Committee to live our commitment to the Pope’s call to Care for Our Common Home in his encyclical, Laudato Sí,” said Ed Peck, Ph.D., vice president for mission and identity.
