John Carroll University proudly welcomed back its beloved mascot, Lobo the Wolf, during a spirited campus celebration on Wednesday, December 4. The event marked Lobo’s return after a five-year hiatus, and was an exciting surprise for everyone in attendance. Lobo made his grand debut descending the stairs in JCU’s newly renovated D.J. Lombardo Student Center, greeted by an enthusiastic crowd.

The celebration brought the John Carroll community together with excitement and energy. Students were given Lobo t-shirts, and posed for photos with the mascot. Adding to the excitement, WJCU 88.7 FM—recently named Station of the Year by the International Student Broadcasting Championship—broadcast the event live.

Pride and spirit is at the heart of what we do. Bringing back Lobo is an incredible way to unite as a community and celebrate our unstoppable JCU spirit!

“Pride and spirit is at the heart of what we do,” said Naomi Sigg, Vice President for Student Experience and Campus Belonging. “Bringing back Lobo is an incredible way to unite as a community and celebrate our unstoppable JCU spirit!” Sigg spearheaded the initiative to reintroduce Lobo, whose role will now be overseen by JCU Athletics.

The timing of Lobo’s return is particularly meaningful as JCU Athletics prepares to join the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) in the fall of 2025.

“College athletics, at any level, is part of the University community experience and the presence of a school’s mascot is a joyful piece of that,” said Brian Polian ’97, Vice President for Athletics and National Engagement. “The Department of Athletics at JCU is excited to welcome Lobo back to campus, and we look forward to watching the energy he brings to athletic competitions and University events alike.”

Lobo’s comeback is part of John Carroll’s ongoing investment in enhancing the student experience. In the lead-up to his return, he participated in virtual gatherings with mascots from other Jesuit institutions across the country. Representing one of 27 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States, Lobo connected with fellow mascots, sharing his signature moves while fostering school spirit.

While John Carroll’s athletic teams remain the Blue Streaks, Lobo serves as a unifying mascot that inspires school pride. His reintroduction underscores the University’s dedication to creating memorable experiences that strengthen bonds among students, alumni, and throughout the greater Cleveland community.
