Three poems by John Carroll University English professor Philip Metres, Ph.D., were featured on Poetry Daily, a website that shares new poems each day, on Saturday, August 17. The untitled poems, selected from Metres’s 2013 book, “A Concordance of Leaves,” open with the following lines:
  • "consider the olive; it gnarls as it grows..."
  • "scarved sisters are radiant with wide..."
  • "because there is a word for love in this tongue..."
Earlier this year, Alice James Books honored Metres with the Beatrice Hawley Award for his forthcoming book, “Sand Opera.” Metres received financial support to complete the manuscript through a 2013 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Creative Writing (Poetry). The fellowship represents the highest standards of excellence and engaging the public with diverse and excellent art. Metres has written several other books, including “To See the Earth,” “Come Together: Imagine Peace,” “Behind the Lines: War Resistance Poetry on the American Homefront Since 1941,” and “abu ghraib arias.” His work also has appeared in “Best American Poetry” and “Inclined to Speak: Contemporary Arab American Poetry,” and has garnered four Ohio Arts Council Grants, the Cleveland Arts Prize, and the Arab American Book Award for poetry. Metres, who has served on the JCU faculty since 2001, coordinates the University’s Young Writers Workshop for high school students each summer. Last year, he received the Lucrezia Culicchia Award for Teaching Excellence, presented annually to a faculty member in the University’s College of Arts and Sciences.
