UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — On the strength of a liberal arts curriculum that inspires students to see the world from many lenses and develop critical thinking skills to become leaders in their communities, John Carroll University once again earned the #2 spot among the Best Regional Universities in the Midwest according to the 2021 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Rankings. 

John Carroll University is also the top-ranked institution in Ohio and the top-ranked Jesuit institution on the Midwest list. The distinction marks the third consecutive year that John Carroll has been ranked second and the 33rd consecutive year that JCU has been recognized in the top-10 of the Midwest rankings.

For regional rankings, U.S. News & World Report considers factors including graduation and retention rates, undergraduate academic reputation, social mobility, faculty resources, student selectivity, and average alumni giving rate, among others. 

John Carroll University also received strong rankings in the Midwest in a variety of categories, including:

  • #2 Best Regional Universities Midwest
  • #4 Best Undergraduate Teaching among Regional Universities Midwest (#1 in Ohio)
  • #22 Best Value among Regional Universities Midwest
  • A+ School for B Students among Regional Universities Midwest

JCU was recognized nationally in the following areas:

  • #347 for Undergraduate Computer Science Program
  • #166 for Overall Undergraduate Business Program

John Carroll has also been selected as one of the 158 best colleges in the Midwest according to the "2022 Best Colleges: Region by Region" report from The Princeton Review®, a leading tutoring, test prep, and college admission services company. 

The Princeton Review survey asks students to rate their colleges on dozens of issues and to answer questions about themselves, their fellow students, and their campus life, and comments from surveyed students are quoted in the school profiles on The Princeton Review website. 

Survey responses included comments like,“I know for a fact that I will walk away with no regret of choosing this school for the fine opportunities and connections that I will gain from being a student at John Carroll University. Their focus on service, social justice, education, and faith allows me to grow in each of these areas, and John Carroll promotes social justice for all and the importance of service, while giving you the tools to become a competent leader.”

The Princeton Review features 654 colleges that they recommend over five regions: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, West, and International. The colleges that made the "Best in the Midwest" list are in twelve Midwestern states and listed alphabetically by school name, but not ranked.
