John Carroll University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs presents: Veronica Dahlberg Executive Director, HOLA, a grassroots Latino organization   Wednesday, October 20, 2010 7 p.m. Dolan Center for Science and Technology / Donahue Auditorium This event is free and open to the public. WHAT:         The 2010-2011 Dr. Shirley S. Seaton Cultural Awareness Series, sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs at John Carroll University, celebrates diversity as integral to today’s society. WHO:             Veronica Isabel Dahlberg, the Mexican-Hungarian daughter of immigrants, was born in Canton, Ohio. She is a longtime advocate in northeast Ohio’s Latino community, and is the executive director of HOLA, a grassroots Latino organization that focuses on community organizing, advocacy and outreach, which she co-founded in 1998.  HOLA’s advocacy work on the local, state and national level is widely recognized. HOLA stands for Hispanas Organizadas de Lake y Ashtabula, which translates to Organization of Hispanic Women of Lake and Ashtabula. Dahlberg is founder and editor of HOLA’s publication, The HOLA Journal, and she serves on the board of directors for the Society of Professional Journalists/Cleveland Pro Chapter, and the ACLU of Cleveland. Veronica was elected to a three-year term (2009-2011) to the advisory council for the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME), a program under the auspices of Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In her capacity as advisor, she meets regularly with more than 100 Mexican American business leaders, activists, educators, and media representatives from around the country. She was appointed as a commissioner by former Ohio Governor George Voinovich to serve a three-year term on the Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs (1998-2000). She is a recipient of the Woman of Achievement Award (2005), from the Women’s Center at Lakeland Community College; and was a member of both 2007-2008 Leadership Lake County and 2003-2004 Leadership Ashtabula County.
