We the People, the Center for Service and Social Action’s (CSSA) service-learning program dedicated to educating Cleveland students about the Constitution and citizenship, was recently awarded a $50,000 grant from the Honor Project Trust. We the People is a 5th-grade tutoring program that brings JCU students into classrooms in Cleveland and East Cleveland to educate elementary students about the U.S. Constitution and citizenship. JCU tutors, in teams of three or four, go to their designated classroom weekly to teach lessons based on the We the People textbook. Tutors meet regularly with their teams and submit lesson plans weekly. JCU tutors assist in preparing the students for the JCU Mock Congressional Hearing held at John Carroll each May. CSSA will use the Honor Project grant funds to enhance learning opportunities for their partners in the program. The funds will help purchase new textbooks for partner classrooms, develop workbooks for the students, and provide the JCU tutors with additional teaching resources. The Honor Project is what’s known as a “cy pres” (sigh-PRAY). If there are unclaimed funds in a class action settlement, a judge can use the cy pres doctrine to distribute funds that remain for beneficial use. The purpose of The Honor Project Trust is to identify charitable organizations that demonstrate in their application societal impact in the State of Ohio and to distribute funds to those entities selected.
