Biography

Daniel Kilbride is the director of the Honors Program at John Carroll and a professor of history. He specializes in the cultural history of nineteenth century America. He has published three books: Being American in Europe, 1750-1860, which examines the experiences of American tourists in Europe; An American Aristocracy: Southern Planters in Antebellum Philadelphia, which investigates how southern travelers, students, and businessmen visiting Philadelphia in the decades preceding the Civil War got along -- or did not get along-- with their northern hosts; and Honoring a Master: Essays in Honor of Bertram-Wyatt Brown, a series of essays exploring various subjects in the history of the American South. He has published articles in Civil War History, the Journal of Southern History, the Journal of the Early Republic, and other historical journals. His current research involves the image of Abraham Lincoln in American popular culture since 1865.
