During the Spring 2021 semester, the RecPlex is operating under a reservation-only system. Members are required make an online reservation for a predetermined time block to access and enter all facilities. Time blocks may vary by space/activity and are subject to change.

Sign-Up Information:

  • Individual time slots are available for sign-up two (2) days in advance starting at 5:00 AM.
  • Only one (1) reservation per day in the entire RecPlex is permitted. Choosing more than one facility is not permitted.
  • You may only reserve space for yourself and may not reserve on behalf of someone else.

Facility Entry:

  • Please arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before the start of your reservation.
  • You may arrive at any time during your time slot but are required to leave by the end of the time slot.

Facility Information & Activities

Corbo Fitness Center:

  • Facility capacity: 30 per time slot
  • Equipment: Primary cardio and strength facility

Fitness Studio:

  • Facility capacity: 12 per time slot
  • Equipment: Treadmills (3), ellipticals (4), rower (1), spin bikes (2) upright bike (1), recumbent bike (1), and functional strength equipment

IM Gym:

  • Facility capacity: 8-20 per time slot
  • Activities: Basketball shooting, net sports, and yard games

Johnson Natatorium:

  • Facility capacity: 6 per time slot (1 swimmer per lane)
  • Activities: Open swim in lap pool

During COVID-19, our top priority is to operate with the health and safety of our members, employees, and the entire campus community in mind. Below is information about our plans to help minimize the potential exposure to COVID-19 and deter it from spreading at JCU. We will continue to monitor health and safety guidelines and recommendations from the State of Ohio, Cuyahoga County, and the University. What is open for use?

Available Spaces:
During the Spring 2021 semester, the Corbo Fitness Center, Fitness Studio, IM Gym, and Johnson Natatorium are available for use via reservation only. The racquetball court and suspended track are closed until further notice. Once in each facility, all equipment use is first-come, first-serve.

Most fitness equipment is spaced to meet physical distancing guidelines and is available for use. No sports or fitness equipment is available for checkout, but you are encouraged to bring your own fitness mats, small weights, bands, basketballs, etc.

Permitted Activities:
Fitness-related activities are permitted in the Corbo Fitness Center and Fitness Studio. In the IM Gym, individual basketball hoops are available for shooting only along with other physically-distant sports and games.

How do I access the facilities?

Facility Reservations - Required During Spring 2021:
To safely operate and limit our capacity during COVID-19, all facilities require an individual reservation to gain access. No reservation = No access. CLICK HERE TO MAKE A RESERVATION!

Who is permitted?
Only current JCU students, faculty/staff, and retirees with an active Carroll Card may use facilities at this time. Alumni, spouses/dependents, Courtesy Cards, community members, and guests are not permitted during the Spring 2021 semester.

Entering the Facility:
Carroll Cards are required and will be self-swiped to gain access to all facilities. JCU Recreation staff will perform a brief temperature screening to ensure a temperature of 100.3 degrees or less. Patrons must also provide proof of a "Good-To-Go" confirmation on the #CampusClear app. For those without a smartphone, in-person options are available for the #CampusClear app.

What other adjustments are being made?

Plexiglass & Floor Markings:
Plexiglass barriers are installed at all staff workstations. Should lines form, patrons should follow the designated floor markings to maintain 6-feet of distance.

Entrances & Exits:
Most doors are propped open with designated entrances and exits to assist with traffic-flow.

COVID-19 educational and directive signage is posted throughout the facilities including reminders to wear masks and practice physical distancing and good hygiene.

Equipment & Floor Spacing:
All stationary equipment and benches are 6-10 feet apart. Equipment should not be move from its designated location with the exception of dumbbells, plates, barbells, medicine balls, etc.

Locker Rooms & Drinking Fountains:
The lockers rooms are open as changing spaces and restrooms only. All showers and individual lockers are closed. Patrons may bring small bags and personal into the facilities, but lockable storage is not available. Drinking fountains are offline, but water bottle fillers are accessible.

How are we promoting a healthy environment?

Staff is conducting hourly cleaning of equipment, workstations, handrails, doors, and other high touch-point surfaces. Deep cleaning will also be conducted upon closure of the RecPlex each night.

Gym Wipes:
Single-use disinfectant gym wipes are available and should be used by all patrons before and after equipment use.

Hand Sanitizer:
Hand sanitizer is available throughout the RecPlex and in all physically-active facilities.

Emergency Response:
Should a medical emergency occur and CPR or rescue breaths need to be administered, two-person bag valve masks will be used by JCU Recreation staff members who are certified through the American Red Cross until advanced medical professionals arrive.

How can I prevent the spread of COVID-19?

Patrons should perform a self-screen prior to visiting the RecPlex, including completing a daily check-in with the #CampusClear app. They should stay home if they or anyone in their household are feeling sick or exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.

Face Coverings:
In compliance with university guidelines and recommendations from the American Council on Exercise (ACE), face coverings are required at all times. This includes during active exercise of any kind.

Hand Sanitizing:
Patrons should wash their hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer upon entering and leaving the RecPlex.

Physical Distancing:
Patrons should stay at least 6-feet from others at all times. Spotting and partner workouts are not permitted, and only controllable weights should be used.

Patrons should use the provided disinfectant wipes before and after each use of equipment. Wipes should be disposed of after each single use.

During the academic year, the Johnson Natatorium is available for open swim to JCU Recreation members during the following times unless a swim meet or reservation is taking place. Hours may be modified during university holidays and breaks.

  • Monday-Friday: 10:45 AM-12:45 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM
  • Saturday-Sunday: 12:00-4:00 PM
  • Open swim times are subject to change due to Swim & Dive team practice

**Due to COVID-19, swim lessons are not being offered at this time. We hope to resume swim lessons in the future, so please check back at a later date for updates.**

Group swim lessons are a great way for your children to get comfortable in the water while having fun at the same time. If you are looking for your child to learn the basics, or want to develop your competitive stroke and technique, this program is right for you! Groups of 3-5 swimmers will be taught by one instructor.

Johnson Natatorium Policies & Procedures:

  • Before entering, all patrons must identify themselves to the Recreation Desk with a current university ID or membership card.
  • The lifeguards are in charge at all times – what they say is final.
  • The use of emergency equipment and telephones is to be used only by the guards.
  • All children under 16 shall be accompanied by an adult.
  • Shower before entering.
  • No horseplay (running, tag, chicken fights, etc.).
  • No food or drink other than water.
  • No hanging on the lane lines.
  • No diving in shallow pool.
  • Patrons suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol are not permitted to enter the pool.
  • No smoking.
  • Enter and exit by the main door.
  • One on the diving boards at a time. High dive is to be used by diving teams only.
  • Not responsible for lost articles.
  • Appropriate swimwear is required for all users of the pool. The lifeguards determine what is appropriate.
  • No person is permitted in the pool if the lifeguard feels the pool is unsafe.
  • No person is permitted in the pool if the lifeguard feels that the person is not capable or qualified to be there.
