When applying to John Carroll University, John Carroll’s admission team embraces the Jesuit value of educating the whole person, taking a holistic approach to ensure we see you beyond your grades. We review each application in its entirety to understand who you are—academically, personally and socially—as a well-rounded individual. We’re looking for qualities that reflect your intellectual curiosity, commitment to service and drive to make a positive impact in healthcare. In your application, we consider your:

  • High school academic record, with an emphasis on science and math courses
  • Extracurricular involvement, especially healthcare-related or service activities
  • Personal essay that highlights your interests
  • Letter(s) of recommendation
  • ACT/SAT test scores (if submitted)

To join our community of healthcare leaders, follow these steps to apply to JCU beginning in August of your senior year:

Step 1: Select your application platform

You can submit your application through either the Common Application or the Coalition Application. Choose whichever platform best suits your needs; JCU’s review process is the same for both options.

Step 2: Complete your application online

Once you’ve chosen your platform, it’s time to fill out and submit your application. This is where you can share your passion for healthcare, experiences and goals.

JCU is test-optional—so submitting ACT or SAT scores is entirely up to you. If you’re unsure, take a look at our Test Optional FAQ for more details. If you decide to include them, have your scores sent directly from the testing agencies to John Carroll University.

Step 3: Submit your high school transcript

Your high school transcript is a critical part of your application. Request that your school counselor send an official copy to John Carroll University. For students interested in studying in the College of Health, a strong performance in science and math courses will be especially beneficial.

To be well-prepared for a major in the College of Health, we recommend the following high school courses:

  • English: 4 units
  • Math: 3-4 units (with college preparatory courses)
  • Science: 3 units (labs preferred)
  • Social Studies: 2-4 units
  • Foreign Language: 2-3 units
  • Academic Electives: 3 units

Overall, we suggest a minimum of 16 units, with 21 recommended, especially in math and science.

Step 4: Send a letter of recommendation

A letter of recommendation is essential for your College of Health application, offering insights into your character, achievements and potential. This could come from a teacher, counselor or mentor who has seen your commitment to academic excellence or healthcare-related activities.

Key Deadlines to Remember

February 1: Regular Admission Deadline. Apply by this date to ensure you’re considered for all financial aid packages. After February 1, applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Transferring Credits for College-Level Coursework

If you’ve completed AP, IB or college-level courses in high school, you may be eligible to transfer these credits toward your studies at John Carroll. Transferred courses must meet specific content and learning goal criteria outlined in our Core curriculum; in some cases, a syllabus may be requested for review.

Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in a course to qualify for credit, though these grades won’t impact your GPA at John Carroll. For more information, visit our credit evaluation page to learn how your credits can apply to your studies at John Carroll.

Homeschooled Applicants

We understand that not all homeschool programs follow a traditional high school curriculum, therefore we ask homeschooled students to provide detailed documentation of coursework and evaluations of progress from an approved homeschool evaluator or supervisor. • A diploma from a homeschool agency governed by a State Board of Education
