Incoming First-Year Students are typically notified of their hall, room, and roommate in mid-July.
We offer single and double occupancy rooms for Incoming First-Year Students. Within the Housing Application, students are able to list their room-type preferences. Please note that room-type placement is dependent on availability.
At this time, Incoming First-Year Students cannot request a specific hall, however, students can request room-types (single, double) and a Living Learn Community (LLC) if they'd like.
Yes! Many of our Fraternity and Sorority Communities live on campus in Sutowski Hall. Visit our Student Involvement page for more information on FSL and other involvement opportunities.
Inspired by our institution’s Jesuit identity, the Office of Residence Life at John Carroll University creates inclusive living-learning environments. We educate students to embrace their identities as engaged learners, develop meaningful relationships, and appreciate community.
Although the University has set standards of behavior for all students, some additional guidelines are necessary for those who live in the residence halls. For a list of community standards, please visit the Community Standards page.
For questions or comments, please contact the Office of Residence Life at 216.397.4408 or jcureslife@jcu.edu.
All entering students, of traditional-age, need to declare their status as a resident or commuter through the Enrollment Reservation Form sent by the Office of Admission.
John Carroll University offers a four year experience in University Sponsored Housing. Students will live in university sponsored housing for four years, unless they are commuting. Commuting is defined as living exclusively in the permanent and primary residence of a parent or legal guardian. The home of the parent or legal guardian must be within 35 miles of the JCU campus.
Priority is given to matched roommate groups where both students are in the LLC. If there is availability, matched roommate groups where one student is in the LLC will be placed on the floor. In the past, we have been able to honor all LLC requests, but please note that this is not a guarantee.
Students typically bring different sizes of rugs depending on if they are trying to cover a smaller area around their bed or a large area shared with their roommate. Most rectangular medium-sized area rugs are a good fit, but if you are looking to cover the entire floor, you may want to wait to make this purchase after you decide how you and your roommate will set up your room during move-in.
The Office of Residence Life uses the answers you provide in your Personal Preferences to match you with a roommate based on living habits, study habits, and then hobbies/interests.
At this time we anticipate that our Living Learning Communities will be in more than one of our First-Year Residence Halls.
There is a printing station in every Residence Hall. You can print from your devices with the information and QR code on the printer. For more information visit https://jcu.edu/its/services/computing-and-printing
Laundry is push-button operated in your Residence Hall. You do not need any money to operate these machines, but you will want to bring detergent, dryer sheets, and any other laundry items you need. There are detailed instructions on machine use in the laundry room and even an app to check if there is a dryer/washer available!
Resident Assistant recruitment and selection typically takes place during the start of the Spring Semester. There are information sessions, group processes, and interviews that you are able to participate in and learn more about this wonderful leadership opportunity.
Our Living Learning Communities continue to grow and expand in our Residence Halls. For more information about our LLCs, please visit our LLC webpage.
Living in the Residence Halls presents a new opportunity to join a community of peers engaged in a shared educational goal. This opportunity can also sometimes feel intimidating. We have heard from our students and Resident Assistants that a great first step to get connected is through the introduction to your RA. They are a student staff member who is there to help provide resources and develop community.
Once you have deposited at John Carroll University, please allow between 24-48 hours for the Housing Application to open to you in your Housing Portal. If you have any concerns after that time, please contact our office.
You can find a full list of what to bring (and what not to bring) to campus here. If you ever have a specific question on an item, please email us at jcureslife@jcu.edu.
Some photos of general room types are available upon request and on our website. General room information and furniture dimensions can be found on our Living Options page.
There is now a virtual tour available on our website here .
While we have a limited amount of single rooms for incoming first-year students, we utilize your room type preference when making housing assignments. It is important to list your preferences in order (ie: single, double) as much as you are able.
Your roommate assignment will be shared at the same time as your room assignment. Please ensure if you are matching with someone in particular that you both have confirmed your match as unmatched roommates will not be assigned together. For more information, please review our First Year Roommate Request and Matching webpage.
All of our First-Year Residence Halls have a focus on creating vibrant communities, so there are not many differences among these buildings other than the location. Every room has a set of bedroom furniture per student including a bed with an extra-long twin mattress, desk, desk chair, dresser, and wardrobe. Please visit our Living Options site to learn more about each building.
Priority is given to matched roommate groups where both students are in the LLC. If there is availability, matched roommate groups where one student is in the LLC will be placed on the floor. In the past, we have been able to honor all LLC requests, but please note that this is not a guarantee.
Living Learning Community events have traditionally been open to other First-Year Students where applicable and when advertised.
Please check with your Enrollment Manager about Social Network groups that you may become a part of. Feel free to follow the Office of Residence Life on Instagram - @jcureslife!
We hope you will bring any snack that you enjoy! It is always a good idea to consider getting to know your roommate and if there are any foods they may have an aversion or allergy too. It's also a good time to remember to read any microwave instructions on heating up things like popcorn and checking to ensure whatever dish you use is microwave safe!
Our First Year Residence Halls have community-style bathrooms on each floor. These have showers, bathroom stalls, and sinks.
Taken from our Mission Statement, "Inspired by our institution’s Jesuit identity, the Office of Residence Life at John Carroll University creates inclusive living-learning environments. We educate students to embrace their identities as engaged learners, develop meaningful relationships, and appreciate community." We also encourage you to read our full Welcoming Statement: We believe in the uniqueness of each individual and therefore welcome all students in the residence life community without regard to race, ethnicity, culture, gender, gender identity, ability, privilege, sexual orientation, political ideology, religious affiliation, or citizenship. We hope to foster an environment where students feel empowered to examine their beliefs, attitudes, and actions toward all people. We will encourage students to challenge stereotypes by increasing their knowledge base, widening their experiences, and engaging in meaningful dialogue about differences. In so doing, we hope that fear and ignorance are reduced and that acceptance and celebration are easily recognizable. We will reach out to students who may feel unwelcome, unseen, or unheard. We will examine department policies and practices to ensure inclusion. We will encourage students who feel marginalized to find their voice through involvement in the campus community as leaders. We expect all individuals to be treated with the dignity and respect their humanness demands. We will accept nothing less.
