(Cleveland, OH) – Dr. Phyllis “Penny” Braudy Harris is the recipient of John Carroll University’s 2009 Distinguished Faculty Award. This award was presented to her during the University’s Commencement ceremony on May 17, 2009. The Distinguished Faculty Award is given annually to a faculty member who has exemplified a quality classroom performance with a balanced contribution to scholarship, community service, and the spirit of Jesuit education. Dr. Harris is a professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminology. She is also director of the Aging Studies Program at John Carroll. One of the main themes that has infused her teaching and research is her concern for issues of social justice, particularly as it pertains to two vulnerable populations: 1) older adults, especially people with Alzheimer’s disease and their family members, and 2) people struggling with issues of poverty. Her work has earned her the honor of being named the 2008 Outstanding Gerontology Educator of the Year in the State of Ohio by the Ohio Association of Gerontology and Education.
