WHO: Carl Wilkens was the director of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency in Rwanda when the genocide erupted there in 1994. He chose to stay in Rwanda during the genocide, and bring food, water, and medicines to several groups of orphans around the capital city of Kigali. Wilkens was the only American to remain in the country after the killings began. His decision to stay and his relief efforts are featured in Frontline’s “Ghosts of Rwanda” and “The Few Who Stayed: Defying Genocide,” an American Radio Works documentary, which aired on NPR. Wilkens is the 2004 recipient of the Dignitas Humana Award, sponsored by Saint John's School of Theology Seminary. The award honors those who recognize and strive to advance the human dignity of all persons. He is currently serving as the Chaplain of Milo Adventist Academy in Days Creek Oregon with his wife Teresa and their three children.
