The 2010-11 Dr. Shirley S. Seaton Cultural Awareness Series will feature Marc Lamont Hill, an associate professor of English education and anthropology at Columbia University, on Wednesday, February 9, 2011. Activist, social critic, and scholar, Hill will discuss "Building Community in a House of Chaos: Progress in the Age of Obama." He is recognized as one of the nation's leading hip-hop generation intellectuals and as a leader in the African-American community. Hill holds an affiliated faculty appointment in African American Studies at the Institute for Research in African American Studies at Columbia University. Trained as an anthropologist of education, he holds a Ph.D. (with distinction) from the University of Pennsylvania. Hill’s academic research focuses on the intersections between youth culture, identity, and educational processes. Hill’s presentation will begin at 7 p.m. in the Jardine Room of the D.J. Lombardo Student Center and is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs at John Carroll University and is presented in conjunction with Cuyahoga Community College.
