WHAT: This lecture is a part of John Carroll University’s Cardinal Suenens Center Fall 2008 Book Series. Dr. Rosenthal will discuss her book, Race Mixture in Nineteenth-Century US and Latin American Fictions: Gender, Culture, Nation Building. Dr. Rosenthal asks the question: how were interracial sexual relationships depicted in fiction in the 19th-century Americas, and why is this important? In this fascinating book, Rosenthal looks at the ways literally representations of intimacy and sex took on political dimensions. WHO: Dr. Rosenthal is a professor of American literature in the English Department at John Carroll University. She was a Visiting Fellow at Oxford University 2005-2006 and is the author or editor of four books, including a new edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
