Dr. Zeki Saritoprak, Director of the Bediuzzaman Said Nursi Chair in Islamic Studies, was recently interviewed by The Christian Century. In the interview he discusses the role of Jesus in Islam, both in the Qur’an and Hadith. In Islamic tradition, Jesus is a healer and performer of miracles – as he is for Christians. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is also important to Muslims. She is the only woman mentioned by name in the Qu’ran and is described in Hadith as the highest woman in paradise. Dr. Saritoprak sees these similarities as places for Christians and Muslims to find common ground. Another source for connection and interfaith dialogue is the concept of Ahl al-Kitab (the people of the book), that Jews, Christians and Muslims share a scriptural heritage.
