Lee Smith, author of The Last Girls, will speak on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, as part of John Carroll's Visiting Writer Series. The lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Marinello Little Theatre and is free and open to the public. Smith has written 15 works of fiction including Oral History, Fair and Tender Ladies, and her most recent work, On Agate Hill. The Last Girls was a 2002 New York Times bestseller, as well as winner of the Southern Book Critics Circle Award. A retired professor of English at North Carolina State University, she has received many awards including the North Carolina Award for Literature and an Academy Award in Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her latest collection of new and selected stories, Mrs. Darcy and the Blue-Eyed Stranger, was published in March 2010.
