English professor and Cleveland poet George Bilgere’s poem, “Joy,” from his 2010 book The White Museum, was featured Wednesday by Garrison Keillor on his daily public radio broadcast and podcast, The Writer’s Almanac. Works by Bilgere have been read on The Writer’s Almanac more than two dozen times. In this poem, Bilgere’s joy comes from having survived the flu: “And this morning I woke up feeling like a little French village the Nazis suddenly decided to pull out of after a particularly cruel occupation.” Bilgere, who directs the creative writing program, is spending the summer in Berlin, learning German and working on his new book.
