John Carroll University has named John T. Day, Ph.D., as its new Academic Vice President. Dr. Day is currently the vice president of Academic Affairs and dean of the College at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. Originally from Poughkeepsie, New York, Dr. Day is a summa cum laude graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. He completed a doctorate in English and American Literature at Harvard University where he also taught in the Expository Writing program. Dr. Day spent 23 years at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he served as chair of the English department, associate dean for interdisciplinary and general studies, and assistant vice president for academic affairs. In announcing the appointment, John Carroll University President Robert L. Niehoff, S.J. said, “Dr. Dayis a proven scholar and the search committee was impressed with his vast academic and administrative experience that stretches over more than 25 years.” Dr. Day, who will begin his duties in August 2008 stated, “I look forward to working with President Niehoff and with others at John Carroll on its strategic initiatives, especially its desire to pursue excellence in a forward-looking academic plan.” He added, “my commitment to John Carroll will be grounded in my own Jesuit education at Holy Cross, with its emphasis on religious faith, academic excellence, and commitment to social justice, which has shaped my character and my career since my undergraduate experience.” In his new role at John Carroll University, Dr. Day’s responsibilities will include enhancing the university’s Jesuit Catholic mission; maintaining high standards for academic programs; and promoting student learning. The academic vice president serves as the acting president in the absence of the president.
