University Heights, OH- Bryan Mauk, a John Carroll University undergraduate student, was recently named one of five recipients of the 2007 Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award for his exemplary commitment to community service. Campus Compact, a national coalition of more than 1,000 college and university presidents, gives the award annually to students who have created an innovative approach to addressing a social, educational, environmental, health, economic, or legal issue within a community. Bryan is being recognized for his work with the St. Benedict Joseph Labre Ministry at John Carroll University. Bryan is a founder of the project: John Carroll students, faculty, and staff prepare hot meals and collect items such as clothing, blankets, topical medicines, and reading materials for Cleveland’s homeless. Approximately 120 people living on the streets are served by the Labre Ministry each week. Bryan has worked tirelessly to develop the Labre Ministry and to ensure its sustainability through collaborations with the Cleveland Food Bank. Bryan has also secured a wide range of grant funding. The other students honored this year with the coveted award hail from Emerson College, Kalamazoo College, Maui Community College, and the University of Notre Dame. The award is named in honor of the life and work of Howard R. Swearer, the 15th president of Brown University and one of Campus Compact's founders.
