WHAT: A panel discussion regarding media coverage of immigration issues. WHO: Panelists: Julia Preston, New York Times Preston, currently the New York Times’ national immigration correspondent, was previously a foreign correspondent in Mexico. She is a member of the New York Times team that won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for international affairs for a series documenting the effects of drug corruption in Mexico. She has reported from several other Latin American countries and was the 1997 recipient of the Maria Moors Cabot Prize for distinguished coverage of Latin America and a 1994 winner of the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Humanitarian Journalism. Robert Smith, Cleveland Plain Dealer Smith is a veteran journalist who covers international cultures and immigration for The Plain Dealer, Ohio’s largest newspaper. He has written extensively about immigration issues, chronicling many different viewpoints of the immigrant experience, from that of undocumented field workers to millionaire entrepreneurs. His 2007 coverage of stepped-up immigration enforcement in the Midwest, and its impact on immigrant communities, won a statewide award. David Leopold, Attorney Leopold teaches immigration law at Case Western Reserve and Cleveland State universities. He has been recognized by his peers as an Ohio Super Lawyer, a process conducted by Law & Politics, a publication of Key Professional Media Inc. He is often quoted in the media and his analyses of immigration issues are published frequently in the national media.
