John Carroll's Physics Department presents the lecture “Portal to the Future: Planning for a SmartHome” by Evalyn Gates, Ph.D., Executive Director and CEO, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, on Friday, April 15, 2011. This lecture is open to the public and free to attend. RSVPs are required by April 13. Gates will discuss the some of the current sustainability initiatives in progress at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, including an energy efficient “SmartHome” that is under construction on the museum grounds. The home is scheduled to open this summer (2011) and visitors to the museum will be invited to tour what could represent the future of energy-efficient housing. The lecture, which is part of the Ohio Section of the American Physical Society (OSAPS) Spring Meeting, held April 15-16, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Dolan Center for Science and Technology. The theme of the conference is “Novel Materials for Our Energy Future" and addresses the current challenge of energy harvesting, usage, and efficiency. Plenary speakers will discuss their research  in the areas of thermoelectrics, photovoltaics, high energy density capacitors, and hydrogen storage.
