Alan Stephenson, communications professor, was recently honored with a lifetime achievement award by the Lower Great Lakes Chapter of The Emmy Awards. He was presented with the award at the 41st annual Emmy Award Gala on June 19, 2010, at the Hilton Garden Inn, downtown Cleveland. Stephenson was part of the initial staff of WVIZ, and made the first on-air announcement when the station was activated. He headed the school broadcasting operation, which was a major function of the station during its first 15 years. He was noted for his “Field Trip” programs that took students to many places in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Central America. At one point, WVIZ was one of the largest suppliers of school programming in the country. In the process, Stephenson and the station picked up a shared national Emmy, four regional Emmys, a Corporation for Public Broadcasting award and a Central Educational Network award. He just finished his twenty-fifth year teaching courses related to mass media at John Carroll.
