Karen Schuele, Ph.D., professor of accountancy, has been appointed dean of the Boler School of Business after serving in the role of interim dean. Schuele has a B.S. in accounting from Case Western University, a masters in professional accounting from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Ph.D. in accounting from Kent State University. She is also a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Ohio. She began teaching at John Carroll after working for Price Waterhouse in Houston, Texas. She was granted tenure and promoted to Associate Professor in 2000. She served as the KMPG Professor at John Carroll from 2004-2007, and was promoted to full professor in accountancy in 2010. A published scholar with over a dozen articles in professional journals and electronic publications, she served as Associate Dean of the Boler school for several years, as well as in a variety of roles at John Carroll, in the community, and in professional organizations. The University conducted a national search, which elicited a very strong pool of candidates. The search committee considered all the comments received as a result of the on-campus visits of the three finalists. Consistent with the established process, the committee made its recommendation, which was followed in offering Schuele the position. During Schuele's time as interim dean, the Boler School experienced a number of significant achievements. She led the efforts of Boler School in achieving its recent successful AACSB re-accreditation. The curriculum for the part-time M.B.A. program was revised to be more integrated and interdisciplinary and has been well received by its recent students. The interdisciplinary minor in Entrepreneurship and the major in Human Resource Management were developed; the minor in Leadership and the major in International Business with Language and Culture were developed and implemented, both in cooperation with the College of Arts and Sciences. She also led the establishment of the Boler Community Day, a project involving faculty, staff, administrators, and students in service to the local community, consistent with the mission of a Jesuit Catholic university. The Boler school is currently engaged in a wide-ranging planning effort to develop a revised core for all undergraduate business majors. Going forward, Schuele will be increasingly involved in strengthening the ties between the Boler School and the regional business community, alumni relations, and fundraising for the Boler School and the University.. "Karen is tirelessly dedicated to the good of the Boler School, its faculty, staff, administrators and students," Academic Vice President John T. Day said. "I have confidence that she will build on her impressive leadership and managerial capabilities as she shifts the balance of her responsibilities to include more external involvement."
