WHAT: World AIDS Day Awareness event in conjunction with the JCU varsity women's basketball game. All donations are welcomed and will benefit St. Alyoisuis Gonzaga High School in Nairobi, Kenya.St. Aloysius Gonzaga is a Catholic secondary school that has, since its founding in December 2003, served HIV/AIDS affected young people in the Kibera slums in Nairobi, Kenya. In order to be admitted to the school, students must have lost one or both of their parents to HIV/AIDS and their surviving parents must also be afflicted with the disease. World AIDS Day is observed on December 1. Individuals and organizations from around the world come together to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic. 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. WHO: John Carroll University Arrupe Scholars will distribute brochures about HIV/AIDS prior to the women’s varsity basketball game. *EVENT HIGHLIGHT: 100 JCU students will create a “Living Red Ribbon” on the floor of the basketball court during half-time. The red ribbon is an international symbol of AIDS awareness that is worn to demonstrate concern about HIV and AIDS. This event is coordinated by the Arrupe Scholars Program, which recognizes John Carroll students for their significant commitment to two interrelated values of John Carroll's mission: intellectual inquiry that demands critical thinking, and engaging in social justice and community service that leads to social action.
