The Housing Application 

The Housing Application for the 2020-2021 academic year opens at 10:00 am on Friday, March 13th, 2020 in your Housing Portal. The application closes at 11:59 pm on Friday, March 20th, 2020. Applications must be submitted online by this deadline in order to participate in Room Selection. The Housing Application includes the Housing Agreement, personal preference questions, emergency, and medical questions. The Housing Agreement is binding for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Viewing of Rooms

Viewing of available rooms begins on Wednesday, March 25th, 2020 at noon. Students involved in the Rising SO Housing Selection Process will be able to log in to their Housing Portal and view rooms available to them throughout the Housing Selection Process until the end of the selection process on Tuesday, March 31st, 2020. 

Please note, the viewing of rooms is a SEPARATE process than that of room selection. We recommend having a backup plan (or plans) should your desired space not be available (this includes dissolving large roommate pairing groups or pairing with another student(s) should your room type not be available). 

Room Selection

Each student involved in the Rising SO Housing Selection Process will be given a random room selection time. The Room Selection process begins on Monday, March 30th, 2020 at 10:00 am until 4:00 pm and continues on Tuesday, March 31st, 2020 at 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Students cannot select into a room until it is their room selection time (which will available to view in their Housing Portal on Wednesday, March 25th, 2020 at noon). 

We recommend having a backup plan (or plans) should your desired space not be available (this includes dissolving large roommate pairing groups or pairing with another student(s) should your room type not be available).

The application closes at 11:59 pm on Friday, March 20th, 2020. Applications must be submitted online by this deadline in order to participate in Room Selection.

The Housing Application includes the Housing Agreement, personal preference questions, emergency, and medical questions. The Housing Agreement is binding for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Once you have completed the Housing Application, the Roommate Selection feature will become available to you in your Housing Portal and will remain available through the entire duration of the Housing Selection Process.

Using the Roommate Selection feature, you can search for your preferred roommate or roommates and send roommate requests. You will only be able to find your roommate(s) after they have also completed the Housing Application. All roommate requests must be mutually approved to be valid.

In order to select into a double, suite, or any other room type with a capacity greater than one (1), you must be paired in a fully mutually approved roommate group of the exact size of the housing type you are pursuing. At your selection time, you will only be able to see available rooms that your group can fill to occupancy and does not exceed the maximum occupancy.

In the event you are presented with no available rooms at your selection time, you may need to dissolve your roommate group or add another member to see the remaining available rooms. Please make sure you plan ahead for this with the other members of your roommate group.

At noon on Wednesday, March 25th, you will be able to log in to your Housing Portal and view a listing of rooms that may be available to you at your selection time.

Rooms that will actually be available to you at your selection time will depend on the size of your roommate group and the rooms that others with earlier selection times may have selected.

Make sure to use the room availability listings to plan ahead for your actual room selection time. It is highly recommended that you have at least 3 backup room selection plans established in the event your first choices are no longer available at your selection time.

On March 25th, Room Selection times will be announced at noon.

Room Selection times are the individually assigned times at which a student becomes eligible to log in and make their room selection. Selection times are randomly assigned in order to give all participants an impartial chance at being able to select the room of their choice.

If you are part of a fully mutually approved roommate group, the member of the group with the earliest selection time may log in and make the room selection for the whole group. Although all members will receive individual selection times, only one person needs to complete a selection for the group.

When your Room Selection time arrives, you will be able to login to your Housing Portal and select from the remaining available rooms.

You will only be presented with rooms to choose from that have not already been selected and that you and/or your roommate group can fill to occupancy without exceeding the maximum occupancy of the space.

In the event you are presented with no available rooms at your selection time, you may need to dissolve your roommate group or add a roommate to see remaining available rooms. Please make sure you plan ahead for this with the other members of your roommate group.

If, even after rearranging your roommate group or if you are unable to add a roommate, you are still presented with no available rooms, the Office of Residence Life will work with you to find an appropriate placement.

If you miss your assigned selection time, you may still log in any time between your assigned time and the close of the Room Selection process on Tuesday, March 31st to make your selection

The Housing Agreement is binding. If space is available, even if it is not your first choice option, you will be held to the entirety of the Housing Agreement.

Please note, housing preferences are not guaranteed. If at the end of the Room Selection process you have not selected into a space, the Office of Residence Life will work with you to find an appropriate placement based on the remaining space available. You may choose to be placed on a waiting list in the event vacancies occur at a later date, but you will not be released from the Housing Agreement.

Once you submit your Room Selection it is final. Changes to your selection cannot be made.

* Buyouts are not a guaranteed option and may only be offered based on capacity. A buyout room is a double room with only one resident. Buyout rooms will continue to contain two sets of furniture.

** Double rooms in Murphy are dependent on availability. There is a limited number of double rooms available, so it is HIGHLY recommended students have a backup plan.

John Carroll University has a two (2) year residency requirement. All students whose parents' or legal guardians' residence is further than 35 miles away from the university are required to live on campus for their first two (2) years.

Additionally, any student who opts into living on campus for their first year, even if their parents' or legal guardians' residence is within the 35-mile radius, has also committed to the two-year residency requirement. Students under this requirement may be released from the two (2) year agreement if the proper Rising Sophomore Change to Commuter Status Process is completed and approved by the deadline prior to participation in the Rising Sophomore Housing Selection Process.

The Change to Commuter Status Process is the process through which students tied to the two-year residency requirement may apply to be released from this requirement.

Students wishing to pursue a release from the two-year residency requirement and a change to commuter status must complete all steps of the process by the deadline of March 10, 2020 at 5:00 pm. No late documentation will be accepted.

The Change to Commuter Status Process has two main components:

Once both documentation requirements have been completed, submissions will be evaluated for a decision on whether or not a release will be granted.

As this process is to pursue a release from a contractual agreement that was previously accepted, a release is not guaranteed.

The Change to Commuter Status Process is only applicable to students wishing to commute from the permanent and primary residence of a parent or legal guardian. Students are not eligible for release to reside in off-campus housing that is not the registered permanent and primary residence of their parent(s)/ or legal guardian(s), such as acquiring an off-campus apartment with other students. The parents' or legal guardians' residency must also be within a 35-mile radius from John Carroll University to be eligible to commute.

The Commuter Confirmation Form requires a notary signature. Forms lacking a valid notary signature are incomplete and will not be taken into consideration for the Change to Commuter Status Process.

Additionally, if a student is found in violation of the parent or legal guardian residency requirement after their Change to Commuter Status has been approved, University Probation will be imposed and the full amount of applicable housing charges for the year will be charged to the student’s account.

Accommodations related to housing must first be approved by the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) department.

If you would like to request an accommodation due to religious or other personal reasons, please contact the Office of Residence Life directly.

Housing Accommodation requests need to be submitted and approved prior to Room Selection. Late accommodation requests will be accepted, but late accommodation placements are dependent on remaining availability after Room Selection has taken place.
