The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program offers free tax help to low-to-moderate income people (generally, $63,398 and below) who are unable to prepare their own tax returns. The VITA program focuses on helping families who may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is a major way to help alleviate poverty among Greater Cleveland. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations in Cleveland receive training to help prepare basic tax returns.

Community Members: Any eligible person who wishes to have their taxes prepared through the VITA program at JCU can call 211 (in Cuyahoga County) or (216) 436-2000 to make an appointment.

The Center for Service-Learning and Social Action and the Boler School of Business Department of Accountancy recruit and train students, faculty, staff, and alumni to help individuals and families file their taxes electronically. Volunteers attend a training in late January and can choose from 4-5 volunteer dates. Registration is now open for 2025 through the VITA service-learning course in Banner.
