B.A. in Sociology & Criminology + M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Save time and money, when you take advantage of this accelerated dual-degree program, where students acquire a B.A. in Sociology and Criminology and a Masters of Clinical Mental Health Counseling in typically five years at John Carroll University. Upon completion of this CACREP-accredited master’s program, students will have completed all academic requirements for an initial license as a Licensed Professional Counselor or Mental Health Counselor. Students can also choose to simultaneously complete a Substance Use Disorder Graduate Concentration, which prepares them for licensure as a Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor (LICDC).

Undergraduate students may formally be accepted into the program after completing at least 60 undergraduate credits. For students in the program, nine credit hours of graduate-level courses can be completed during the fourth year and will count toward combined B.A. and M.A. requirements. Upon completion of 120 credit hours, students will earn their B.A. in Sociology & Criminology and upon completion of the full accelerated program, students will earn their Master’s of Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

Accelerated Program Admission Criteria:

An undergraduate major in Sociology & Criminology at John Carroll University.

An undergraduate cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
Two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant’s academic work, professional work, vocational commitment, and suitability for the role of counselor are required. Ideally, these letters will come from former professors and/or employers who can comment on the suitability of the applicant for graduate study.
A letter of intent from the applicant outlining career objectives and goals. The letter should be 400-600 words in length. It will be evaluated for content and grammatical and mechanical correctness.
Resume which includes both work and volunteer experience.
An interview process that may include: a writing sample, an individual interview and/or a group interview.

The Department of Counseling accepts applications on a rolling basis. For best consideration, applications should be received by May 1 for fall and February 1 for summer semester. Applicants applying for graduate assistant positions should submit all materials for admission by the February 1 deadline.
